Lifestyle changes to achieve personal fitness goals are a long-term game. There are no ‘silver bullets’ to overhaul your health and fitness in a matter of days or weeks (sorry!). That’s not to say you can’t make improvements in those time frames, but the extent of the improvement you expect can often end up letting you down in the long run.
Could you give up all refined sugar and flour in your food choices at home from today onward and forevermore? Absolutely! However, when big goals like this are crammed into a short time frame, the results can deplete and deprive you. In turn, this means a low likelihood of any future sustainability of the goal.

So you want to achieve your personal fitness goals?
Small changes are an important key to success when improving health and fitness effectively. This is a tough concept to swallow in a society that seeks instant gratification with every choice. In reality, however, this is how health and fitness goals are achieved safely, sustainably, and enjoyably.
If you aim to give up all refined sugar and flour in your food choices at home, where you start will depend on where you’re now. Look for a tiny step at a time to improve the choices you are currently making. You might start with the following small targets:
- Find out what healthy alternatives can be used (start with a healthy grocery list).
- Look for a variety of healthy recipes using the new ingredients.
- Buy new ingredients (I recommend iHerb as an awesome online health shop for groceries and more).
- Try one new recipe each week with new ingredients…and so forth.
Small changes. Big results!
If you find that a target you set for yourself is too difficult to adhere to, that is an indication to break it down and make it smaller, or perhaps focus on a different area for a while. Goals consist of many small parts coming together to create results.
