Exogun Review | Is It The Best Percussive Therapy Massage Gun?

By Elly McGuinness

A percussion gun for massage is a very useful tool for soft tissue manipulation all over the body. It can be used for gentle fascia release on sore muscles. As well, it’s a fantastic deep massage solution to release trigger points and reduce muscular pain. The ExoGun is one of many percussion massagers on the market. Overall, it compares very well to its competitors, especially as a budget-friendly option. I was grateful to be gifted an ExoGun DreamPro percussive massager to test and review. Here I’ll share my ExoGun review, including the main features, how it compares to other popular choices, and my overall thoughts on this device.

What are the benefits of percussion massage guns?

Percussive devices like the ExoGun massage gun combine the benefits of massage with vibration therapy. Massage guns are lightweight and portable. You can learn to use one yourself, in the comfort of your own home. They are one tool that can be used as part of a solution for releasing tight muscles and reducing muscle pain.

Percussion therapy can be used to:

  • Reduce the incidence of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after a workout
  • Improve recovery in between strenuous workouts
  • Prepare the body for a workout
  • Provide relief from symptoms associated with acute injuries or chronic muscle conditions
  • Relieve general muscle aches and pains
  • Help with relaxation and rejuvenation
  • Relieve joint pain such as knee pain when you release tight muscles surrounding the joint. (For example, quads, hamstrings, or calves).

The combination of vibration and massage helps to improve blood circulation. Percussion massage allows blood vessels to open up and this promotes better blood flow to the muscle tissue. Percussion massagers can help improve the range of motion in muscles and joints, assist the release of lactic acid, and even promote the breakdown of scar tissue from previous injuries.

Exogun review | Features and specifications of the ExoGun massage gun

The ExoGun massager is well worth considering if you want a gentle yet powerful massage. It is a handheld device with a pistol-grip design. The Exogun offers an effective battery-powered solution for both muscle release and body pain relief. Some of the main features include:

  • A single button to turn it on and easily adjust to your desired intensity.
  • Precise massage via a customizable speed range. You’ve got the choice of 6 adjustable speed settings and 4 different massage attachment heads to target each different type of tension. Achieve anything from a gentle myofascial release at the lowest setting to an intense massage sensation that gets right into the deep tissues at the highest.
  • The Exogun percussion massager has an impressive RPM range. You can easily adjust it to suit your pain threshold and massage needs. The lowest speed setting vibrates at 1200 percussions per minute with the highest at 3200 percusses per minute. The vibration speed range is 20-53 Hz.
  • The Exogun brushless motor is a powerful motor, yet it’s relatively quiet at 70db on the most powerful setting.
  • An ergonomic design that makes it easy to hold onto comfortably for the full duration of a thorough self-massage.
  • The screen on the end of the Exogun shows the speed setting. It also includes a battery life indicator that displays the percentage of battery life remaining. There is a one-month battery life when the Exogun is not in use. When it’s in use, Exogun’s long-lasting battery life is also impressive.

Exogun Review | Comparison with other brands

I can’t share direct personal comparisons to other percussion therapy guns because the Exogun is the first one I’ve personally owned. What I can say is that it has been a welcomed asset to my toolkit for muscle tension release and troublesome fascia. It compares well with other brands on price, value, and percussive power.

Deep tissue percussion massage guns have gradually come down in price since more options have become available. The price range varies with very cheap options such as the Medcursor handheld massage gun at $59.99 and the Cryotex massage gun at $89.95. At the other end of the range, you’ve got products like the Srytenty MG8000 at $499 and the Theragun Pro for $597.

When you check out the Exogun, you’ll see they display a seemingly huge discount. To my knowledge, this discount always appears, so the actual price is $169.

Exogun also offers additional discounts when you are purchasing more than one device. Ask your friends if they want one too, or purchase a second one as a gift!

All brands offer a variety of attachment heads and speeds. Unless you’re a professional athlete or have more specific needs, the Exogun is a great at-home option for regular massage and muscle tension release.

My overall thoughts on the ExoGun massager

I love using my ExoGun percussive massage gun regularly and it certainly meets all of my percussion therapy needs. I’m especially impressed with the well-above-average battery life. This may be due to the use of lithium-ion batteries.

With a little bit of pressure, it’s amazing how well I can work into the deep tissues with only a very short treatment. The different massage head attachments allow me to get slightly different types of massage, with only one device. My partner helps me to massage my upper back, which I find difficult to reach with the Exogun by myself.

The Exogun comes with a small information leaflet. It’s very light on information. I’d like to see them create something a bit more comprehensive that shares specific massage tips, especially for first-time users. Of course, there are lots of information videos on YouTube, which share these sorts of tips if needed.

I had a very good customer service experience with Exogun. They communicated promptly and were also extremely helpful. I’m not sure whether this is a typical experience given that I received an Exogun to test and review, so I did not go through the regular purchasing route.

I did receive a confirmation email and tracking number so I could see exactly where the Exogun was, which all orders should expect to receive. Overall, I’d certainly recommend the ExoGun massage gun as a worthwhile addition to your self-massage toolkit.

Frequently asked questions about percussion massage and ExoGun

Is percussion massage effective?

Studies have shown that both vibration therapy and massage can be effective treatment approaches for the prevention of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Percussion massage guns combine both of these therapies and can be a useful tool for increasing blood flow, managing muscle pain, and reducing stiffness.

Is the ExoGun any good?

The Exogun sports massager compares well to similar percussion massager devices on the market. It has 6 speed settings (1200-2300 strokes per minute) and 4 different massage heads. Any massage gun can be part of an effective relief solution for muscle pain and stiffness when it is used correctly.

What are the four Exogun massage heads used for?

The Exogun has four different massager heads, each of which enables you to target the muscles in a slightly different way. The flat head multipurpose attachment with its tiny raised dots works well on many different muscles and offers a relatively gentle approach to percussion therapy. The big circle is my favourite attachment. It’s a versatile attachment that is fantastic for larger muscle groups, whilst the small bullet-style head offers a therapeutic deep tissue massage. Finally, the fork attachment is perfect for releasing tight muscles on either side of the spine.

How long does ExoGun take to ship?

Your Exogun may arrive in as little as a few days, or it could take several weeks. This primarily depends on the shipping method and destination. For example, the expected delivery time by airmail to the United States, Canada, and the UK is between 7 and 20 working days. I received a tracking code as expected, and my Exogun was delivered within the expected timeframe.

How do you use an ExoGun?

You can use the Exogun just as you would use any other self-massage device. Turn the device on and select your desired massage head and speed. Then place the massage gun onto the muscle and move it around the area that you want to release. Apply additional manual pressure as desired. If you are unsure how to use a massage gun, consult a qualified physical therapist or physical trainer with experience in percussive therapy.

How do I charge my Exogun?

The Exogun fascia massager comes with a charging cable that you plug into a power socket. It is recommended to charge the Exogun for six hours before you use it for the first time. When it is charging the display will be on with a circular motion on the left side and a red light to indicate that your device is charging. Red and green lights indicate that your device is almost charged, and a green light shows that it is fully charged. You’ll see a number on the right side of the display, which indicates the percentage of battery level remaining, so you’ll know when to recharge it.

When should I not use the Exogun?

Avoid using the Exogun if you have a health condition or injury that could be adversely affected. A fresh injury is different from a general muscle ache and will require specialized treatment. Check with your healthcare practitioner if you are not sure whether it’s safe for you. Seek professional advice if you have high blood pressure, heart issues, blood vessel problems, cancer, muscle, joint, or bone conditions, or you are taking blood thinners.

I hope my Exogun review has been useful for you. I certainly love using mine to help release tense muscle knots, and I hope you do too. For me, a massager gun like the Exogun is a very worthwhile investment if it’s used regularly. It’s a cheap and convenient alternative to traditional massage options.
